About this project
The Plaza West Patient Tower at BJC Hospital stands as an example of thoughtful healthcare design, advanced construction, and patient-focused innovation. Designed by CannonDesign, the tower reflects a clear vision for modern healthcare environments that balance aesthetics, performance, and functionality. Through evidence-based design principles and a deep understanding of clinical needs, CannonDesign shapes spaces that support healing while incorporating durable, healthcare-grade materials and refined interior finishes. From antimicrobial surfaces and seamless flooring systems to integrated wall protection and custom medical storage, every detail is intentionally selected to perform in a demanding hospital setting.
Infection prevention is central to the Plaza West Patient Tower’s design strategy, reinforcing BJC Hospital’s commitment to patient safety. CannonDesign’s approach emphasizes non-porous, cleanable materials, intuitive layouts, and reduced touchpoints to help minimize risk and support clinical protocols. Enhanced airflow, clear circulation paths, and flexible care spaces further strengthen infection control while improving staff efficiency. Together, the tower’s smart design, high-performance materials, and infection prevention features bring CannonDesign’s vision to life - delivering a safe, welcoming, and future-ready healthcare environment for patients, caregivers, and the community.
ACUTE PATIENT CARE
In 2023, Shield Casework was selected to manufacture custom personal protective equipment (PPE) cabinets cabinets for BJC. With a focus on infection prevention and cleanability, the design features 100% acrylic solid surface construction. With no substrates, there is no risk of delamination or bacteria growth below the surface.
Features include gown storage with adjustable sizing, glove dispensers, mask dispensers, concealed hinges, integrated hand sanitizer, and overflow storage. Two versions of the PPE cabinets were built to accommodate for corridor layout as well as staff PPE needs. In total, 280 PPE Cabinets were delivered to BJC Hospital - designed and manufactured specifically to the needs of BJC HealthCare, and its patients.
The growing demand for critical care requires facilities that are as sophisticated and innovative as the care that we offer. The enhancements in Plaza West Tower are designed to foster collaboration among caregivers, which ultimately benefits our patients.
