About this project

The University of Kansas Health System was in need of a major expansion of its emergency department to address a sharp rise in patient volume and better serve its role as the state’s only nationally verified Level I trauma center. Originally built for 42,000 visits a year but now handling nearly 68,000, the outdated space was reimagined to improve flow, safety, and clinical efficiency. The renovation added 52 treatment rooms, a dedicated trauma suite, advanced imaging capabilities, and a redesigned ambulance and walk-in entrance—while keeping the ED fully operational throughout construction.

This expansion enhances patient care by reducing wait times, streamlining workflows, and creating a more modern, calming environment. For clinicians, improved layouts and support areas allow for faster, more coordinated emergency response. It also solidifies TUKHS' reputation as a regional leader in trauma care and emergency medicine, drawing international attention from healthcare systems abroad. With future phases still planned, the investment reflects a long-term commitment to meet growing demand and deliver top-tier emergency services.

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

In 2023, Shield was selected to manufacture custom pass through nurse server supply cabinets with Pulse Design Group. The design combines PPE cabinet access with revolutionary pullout storage, allowing staff to restock patient room supplies from the corridor without entering the room or disturbing the patient. The supply cabinet also features a linen cart pass through, combining all of the necessary features of patient room casework into a single product.

Exterior features include three glove dispensers, gown dispenser, and two mask dispensers. Interior features include customizable modular supply shelving, pop-out documentation surface, and linen cart pass through.

In addition, Shield also manufactured over 90 linear feet of custom casework for the CT exam room, trauma exam room, X-ray exam and control rooms, supply room, and decontamination room.

I would say the best part about the collaboration is the customization, SHIELD never balks at doing a custom product. So it could be a standard product, but if we need to change it for the client, it’s never ‘oh, we can’t do this, it’s how do we do that.’
